Word WorkClarkston school district uses a word work program called Words Their Way. This program helps students learn different word sounds and patterns through word work activities so that they can apply them to their reading and writing lives. It does not give students a list of words to memorize and then be assessed on.
Ideas to work on word patterns at home: *Word Hunt: students should hunt through books and other writing for words that match the sound pattern they're working on. Ex: my pattern is words beginning with sh. I could look for words in my books or other writing like shop, shoe, shut, ship, etc. *House Hunt: students should hunt for objects in their house that match the sound pattern they're working on. Ex: my pattern is words ending in -ch. I could find objects around the house such as couch, lunch box, pouch, etc. *Rhymes: students should write down one word using their word pattern. Then, students should write down as many words they can think of that rhyme with that word. Ex: my pattern is words that follow an -oa pattern. I could write down boat. Then I could list other words that rhyme with boat, like coat, float and moat. |
